George and Harold link up in kindergarten to reduce a quartet of vicious bullies to giggling insanity with a relentless series of pranks involving shaving cream, spiders, effeminate spoof text messages and friendship bracelets. Cut to five years previous, in a prequel to the whole series. The villain sets off after George and Harold, who are in juvie (“not much different from our old school…except that they have library books here.”). There, he witnesses fellow inmate Tippy Tinkletrousers (aka Professor Poopypants) escape in a giant Robo-Suit (later reduced to time-traveling trousers). To start, in an alternate ending to the previous episode, Principal Krupp ends up in prison (“…a lot like being a student at Jerome Horwitz Elementary School, except that the prison had better funding”). Not that there aren’t pranks and envelope-pushing quips aplenty. Sure signs that the creative wells are running dry at last, the Captain’s ninth, overstuffed outing both recycles a villain (see Book 4) and offers trendy anti-bullying wish fulfillment. Although the core of this tale is heartwarming, the merry-go-round, like Ray Bradbury’s carousel in Something Wicked This Way Comes, hints at darkness, leaving its riders and the novel’s readers changed forever. A bestselling author in Germany, who has reached the US for the first time, Funke delights readers in the feelings of childhood, what it feels like to be innocent, afraid, curious, and safe need friends and love and want independence yet also to be cared for. The magical city of Venice, with its moonlit waters, maze of canals, and magnificent palaces, is an excellent setting for the plot twists and turns in this fantasy/mystery/adventure, all rolled into one spellbinding story.

Prop and Bo feel at home with their new comrades (three other orphans who survive by picking pockets, but are otherwise harmless) in an abandoned movie theater. It's difficult to see these kids forced to make such an adult decision, but it makes for a powerful, and deeply moving, movie that will resonate with both children and adults.When the orphans Prosper, 12, and Boniface, 5, run away from Hamburg to Venice to escape separation by their aunt and uncle Hartlieb, the crotchety, childless couple hires private detective Victor Getz to find Bo, the only brother they want. Once the rest of the group learns the truth, Prosper and the Thief Lord must make a difficult decision that could change, forever, their relationship to the rest of their improvised family. While the older kids are absorbed in planning the heist, Bo gradually discovers that the object they are seeking may have mystical properties that, initially, only he can discern. This is a tough message for children to absorb, but the film pulls it off gracefully by introducing a hint of magic. Add to the mix the boys' horrid aunt Esther, who has adopted the adorable Bo but finds his brother too much trouble and has consigned him to an orphanage, and it's clear that in this story, families are defined by affection and concern rather than blood. As Prosper spends more time with the Thief Lord, he uncovers a huge secret about his new friend's background. The strong brotherly bond between the teenage Prosper and his much younger brother forms the core of this enchanting film, and the story takes pains to examine the meaning of family.
